Recycling of thermoset blades
The aim is to make offshore wind farms fully circular. The plastic composite wind turbine blades form a challenge because there is still no economically lucrative method to recycle the complete blades on a large scale. The technology is there and so is the need. What are the challenges we need to overcome in the coming years? TNO has conducted research into the efficient recovery of the glass fibre from the blade material and reuse in injection molding products such as recyclable car parts. This is one of the possible solutions that are feasible in Europe for scaling up. The different scenarios are analysed with the effect on costs and the impact on the environment based on the supply chain and the wind farms in the North Sea.
